The Ultimate Guide to Hornby Island

The Ultimate Guide to Hornby Island

Exploring Hornby Island: A Hidden Gem of the Gulf Islands

Hornby Island is more than a destination; it’s a place where time slows down, creativity thrives, and nature takes centre stage. My adventures to this Gulf Island have left me with countless cherished memories, from early morning ferry rides to breathtaking sunsets. Whether you arrive by car or bike, the journey to Hornby Island is as much a part of the adventure as the destination itself. Here’s a look at what makes Hornby Island so magical and why it’s worth adding to your travel list.

Getting There: A Scenic Journey

Reaching Hornby Island from Vancouver is a journey of its own, filled with stunning views and a sense of anticipation. Early morning starts are essential to catch the first ferry from Horseshoe Bay, followed by a scenic drive to Buckley Bay. From there, a ferry takes you across to Denman Island, where a short drive or bike ride leads to the ferry terminal for Hornby Island.

One of my most memorable trips to Hornby was by bike. It’s a challenging but rewarding adventure, with rolling hills, ocean views, and the sense of accomplishment that comes with reaching the island under your own power. Whether by car or bike, the journey sets the tone for the tranquil escape that awaits.

Exploring Hornby’s Natural Beauty

Hornby Island is a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts. From hiking to kayaking, the island offers endless opportunities to connect with nature. Some of my favorite spots include:

Whaling Station Bay: This serene beach is perfect for relaxing, swimming, and soaking up the island’s laid-back vibe. This beach is not as big and sandy as Big Trib, but it is often more tranquil and offers a nice change of pace.

Helliwell Provincial Park: A must-visit for its dramatic cliffs, wildflower meadows, and breathtaking ocean views. Hiking the trails here is both invigorating and peaceful. There are also some hidden and top secret swimming spots along the way, and although not advised, some cliff jumping spots for the ultra-daring (like my brother).

Big Tribune Bay Beach: Known for its expansive sandy shore and warm waters, it’s a popular spot for families and one of the island’s most iconic locations. I must say, this is one of the most beautiful places on Earth. It never ceases to amaze me. Spending a day playing, tanning, and swimming is a must for me when I visit. I love watching the incredibly long beach slowly disappear as the tide comes in and almost serendipitously nudges you to pack up and hop on your bike before the sunsets.

Mount Geoffrey: Hiking up Mount Geoffrey offers panoramic views of the surrounding Gulf Islands. The trails are also great for mountain biking, providing an exciting way to explore the island’s rugged terrain. This is also a great vantage point to check out Denman Island, and if you are lucky you might catch some whales passing through the channel. I also love birds of prey, and there are always eagles, ravens and turkey-vultures about. Sometimes if you are lucky, you can also spot an osprey or two.

Fords Cove Best Fish and Chips you'll ever have. That's all I say.

Local Highlights: Markets, Co-ops, and Coastal Charm

Hornby Island’s vibrant community spirit shines through in its summer craft market. Held weekly, the market showcases the work of talented local artisans, from handmade jewelry to unique art pieces. It’s the perfect place to find a special keepsake or gift. The market also has lots of good snacks and usually draws a good crowd in the summer. Chances are if you know someone else on the island, you will bump into them there.

A visit to the Hornby Island Co-op is another must. This charming general store is the island’s hub, offering everything from groceries to locally made goods. Stopping by the Co-op feels like stepping back in time, with its warm community atmosphere and eclectic offerings. I seem to end up visiting the Co-op every day for one reason or another. Wether it is a flat bike tire, or a lack of ice, the Co-op is your place.

Biking and Kayaking Adventures

Hornby Island is a cyclist’s dream, with quiet roads and scenic routes that make exploring the island a joy. One of my favorite rides is the journey to Ford’s Cove, where you can enjoy some of the best fish and chips around while taking in the stunning coastal views. For water enthusiasts, kayaking around Hornby’s shoreline offers a unique perspective of the island’s beauty, from hidden coves to rocky outcroppings.

Why Hornby Island?

Hornby Island is a place that stays with you long after you leave. Its natural beauty, creative community, and peaceful atmosphere make it a destination unlike any other. Whether you’re hiking, biking, kayaking, or simply relaxing on the beach, Hornby Island offers the perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
